Blue Origin’s New Glenn Explodes on Pad—Worst Cape Disaster Since 2016
Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket exploded in a static fire test at Cape Canaveral, destroying the vehicle and severely damaging Launch Complex 36 ahead of NG-4.
In Brief
- Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket exploded during a static fire test at Cape Canaveral on May 28, destroying the vehicle and severely damaging Launch Complex 36.
- The explosion is the worst at Cape Canaveral since SpaceX’s Falcon 9 pad failure in 2016, and the worst disaster in Blue Origin’s 25-year history.
- New Glenn is now grounded through at least 2026, delaying NASA’s lunar lander missions and Amazon’s 3,200-satellite Leo constellation.
Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket exploded at approximately 9PM ET on May 28 during a static fire test at Launch Complex 36 in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The rocket’s seven BE-4 engines ignited before the vehicle was consumed by a massive fireball, Ars Technica reports.
All personnel were accounted for with no injuries. The explosion destroyed the first stage and caused extensive pad damage — one lightning tower is likely unsalvageable, and the transporter-erector may be damaged beyond repair.
It’s too early to know the root cause but we’re already working to find it, Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos said on X. Very rough day, but we’ll rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying, per SpaceNews.
Setback for Moon and Broadband
The vehicle was preparing for the NG-4 mission carrying Amazon Leo broadband satellites. The satellites were not on board — they remained safe in a nearby integration facility, TechCrunch reports.
The explosion jeopardizes NASA’s Artemis lunar program. Blue Moon Mark 1, Blue Origin’s uncrewed lunar lander designed to launch on New Glenn, was scheduled for this fall. A second Mark 1 mission carrying NASA’s VIPER rover was planned for 2027. The larger Blue Moon Mark 2 crewed lander also depends on New Glenn, alongside SpaceX’s Starship.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman called the failure a reminder that spaceflight is unforgiving, and said the agency will assess near-term mission impacts. The last comparable pad explosion at the Cape was SpaceX’s Falcon 9 in September 2016 — that pad took more than 14 months to rebuild.
New Glenn almost certainly will not launch again in 2026, with defense tech and commercial customers now facing extended delays. Blue Origin had 2 first stages and approximately 6 upper stages in inventory before the explosion.
FAQ
What caused the New Glenn explosion?
The cause is under investigation. Sources indicated the problem appeared to start in the engine section of the first stage during the static fire test.
Was anyone hurt in the explosion?
No. Blue Origin and the Space Force confirmed all personnel were accounted for and safe.
What happens to Amazon’s satellite launches?
Amazon’s Leo broadband satellites were not on the rocket. However, the 24-launch contract to deploy the 3,200-satellite constellation now faces extended delays with New Glenn grounded.
How does this affect NASA’s Moon missions?
Blue Origin’s Blue Moon Mark 1 lunar lander was due to launch this fall on New Glenn. That timeline is now uncertain, potentially delaying the VIPER rover mission and the broader Artemis schedule.
