Amazon Already Selling OpenAI Products on AWS—Before the Ink Dried on Microsoft Divorce Papers

Amazon moved faster than expected. On Tuesday, April 28, AWS announced it had already begun offering OpenAI’s latest models through Amazon Bedrock—a limited preview that gives AWS customers access to frontier AI through the same APIs and controls they already use for Anthropic’s Claude, Meta’s Llama, and Mistral’s models. The announcement came just one day after OpenAI formally ended its Microsoft exclusivity arrangement.
The timing was not subtle. OpenAI settled its legal dispute with Microsoft over the $50 billion Amazon deal on April 27, clearing the last major obstacle to a full AWS rollout. By April 28 morning, OpenAI products were live on Bedrock. No waiting period. No phased rollout. Amazon simply flipped the switch.
The expanded partnership brings three offerings to Bedrock in limited preview: the latest OpenAI models accessible through existing Bedrock APIs and controls, Codex—OpenAI’s coding agent with more than 4 million weekly users—available on Bedrock for enterprise software development, and Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents, powered by OpenAI, for building production-ready AI agents in the cloud. According to Amazon’s blog post, customers can evaluate and deploy OpenAI models “alongside models from Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, Cohere, Amazon, and other leading providers, all through a single, consistent service with unified security, governance, and cost controls.”
Three Offerings, One Platform, Zero New Security Models to Learn
For enterprise customers already running on AWS, the appeal is straightforward: you get OpenAI’s frontier models without reconfiguring your infrastructure. OpenAI models on Bedrock inherit the full enterprise control stack—IAM-based access management, AWS PrivateLink connectivity, guardrails, encryption at rest and in transit, and comprehensive logging through AWS CloudTrail. There’s no additional infrastructure to configure and no new security model to learn. Customers can also apply OpenAI usage toward their existing AWS cloud commitments, consolidating AI spend alongside broader workloads. For organizations already spending heavily on AWS, this simplifies procurement and financial governance in a way that Microsoft Azure’s billing structures historically haven’t.
Codex on Bedrock is the more immediate practical play. More than 4 million developers use Codex every week to automate coding tasks, write and refactor code, explain complex systems, and generate tests. Putting Codex inside Bedrock means enterprise software teams can access it within the AWS environments where they already build and operate—no separate subscriptions, no new vendor relationships to manage. The competitive pressure on GitHub Copilot, which runs on Microsoft’s infrastructure, is now direct.
Satya Nadella, for his part, seemed unbothered. At an event the same week, Nadella said Microsoft is ready to “exploit” the new arrangement with OpenAI. It was a carefully chosen word. Whether it signals confidence or cope remains to be seen.
The Microsoft Divorce Is Final—But Azure Still Gets Paid
The Amazon deal represents a significant acceleration of OpenAI’s multi-cloud strategy. Just months ago, OpenAI’s exclusive arrangement with Microsoft limited it to Azure for new model deployments—a constraint that OpenAI ended in late April after settling the legal dispute. Microsoft will still receive a guaranteed $250 billion from OpenAI over the life of the Azure commitment. But exclusivity is gone, and AWS—and Google Cloud—can now compete openly for OpenAI workload.
The earnings picture makes the timing sharper. Amazon reported AWS revenue growth of 28% in Q1 2026, topping analyst estimates. AI services were a significant contributor. Adding OpenAI models to Bedrock positions AWS to capture even more of the expanding AI infrastructure market—a market that Microsoft’s Azure division is now competing for with a weakened exclusive position.
